The Real Poetical Life Story

BLOGGER

I have little to say of poetry, save this:

The poet is bound by his verse, with only the divine reigning supreme above him!

Where My Shadow Learned My Name

Where My Shadow Learned My Name

A reflection for readers of PoeticalVibe

There are moments in life when you suddenly realize something you’ve been running from… was never chasing you at all.

We spend years avoiding our shadows — the memories we don’t want to revisit, the mistakes we’d rather forget, the versions of ourselves we hope no one remembers. We treat the shadow as a threat, as proof of something broken or unfinished.

But this poem began with the opposite discovery.

When I turned and finally looked at the darkness behind me, I did not find a monster.

I found myself.

Not the polished self.

Not the brave self.

Not the version built for the daylight.

I found the life I had actually lived.

The shadow in this poem isn’t a symbol of fear — it’s an archive.

A quiet biography.

A keeper of everything we survive without applause.

I realized that every scar had a location.

Every fear had a shape.

Every act of staying, even when leaving seemed easier, was part of the map that made me who I am.

And suddenly the darkness didn’t look like darkness anymore.

It looked like evidence.

Evidence that I stood my ground.

Evidence that I didn’t collapse.

Evidence that even on the days when I felt erased, something in me kept going.

That’s why the poem ends the way it does — not triumphant, not tragic, but honest:

“I have been.”

Sometimes that’s the bravest sentence a person can say.

We don’t need to pretend our shadows aren’t there.

We only need to understand what they really hold:

not our failures,

but our footsteps.

Not our shame,

but our shape.

Not the story we fear,

but the story we’ve earned.

If this poem reaches you today, I hope it reminds you of this:

Your shadow isn’t the proof that something is wrong.

It’s the proof that you kept moving, even when life tried to stop you.

And that alone is enough to speak your name with pride.
