The Real Poetical Life Story

BLOGGER

I have little to say of poetry, save this:

The poet is bound by his verse, with only the divine reigning supreme above him!

Whispers of the Cedar Night

Whispers of the Cedar Night

Some poems arrive loudly.

This one did not.

It came the way cedar resin darkens slowly, the way dusk does not fall but gathers.

Whispers of the Cedar Night begins in a garden, but it is not about scenery. The lilies, the ponds, the cedars — they are thresholds. They prepare the reader for a narrowing. For the moment when daylight recedes and something more attentive takes its place.

Dusk in this poem is not melancholy. It is concentration.

The world grows quieter, and in that quiet the speaker begins to listen — not outward, but inward.

The most important movement in the poem is subtle: the sacred shifts location. What begins in landscape moves beneath the ribs. The nave is no longer stone. The altar is not external. It forms inside remembering.

Longing is described as a “hidden seam.” That image matters. A seam is not decoration. It holds fabric together. Longing, then, is not weakness. It is structure. It keeps what might unravel from doing so.

The beloved is not portrayed as a spectacle, not a blazing revelation, not a storm. Instead, there is a small light beneath ash — steady, near bone. A presence that does not flare, does not demand, but answers.

This is love as calibration, not conquest.

Toward the end, the poem makes its quiet claim:

If myth endures, it leans because of this:
One mortal breath held steady over the abyss.

The abyss is still there. The poem does not erase it. It does not rescue us from it. What it offers is steadiness — breath that does not retreat.

That is the cedar way: rooted, resin-dark, patient.

In a time when noise dominates everything, this poem asks for something rarer.

Stillness.

And in that stillness, fidelity.
